Our Mission
Amalna means “Our Hope” in Arabic. Our hope is to advance women’s development in Morocco. A primary focus of Amalna Maroc is to work with women’s cooperatives in Morocco, especially in rural areas, by providing education, resources and support that increase empowerment and economic opportunity for Moroccan women, including girls.

In Morocco, women’s participation in the labor force is one of the lowest in the world; only 21.6 % of the women earn an income. Women’s cooperatives (small businesses run by all members) play a central role increasing economic opportunity and empowerment for Moroccan women working in over 2,000 cooperatives. However, cooperatives’ success varies widely; there is a lack of on the ground data on their effectiveness. Amalna Maroc is working to better understand what drives successful women’s cooperatives, and develop programs that increase their success. Our focus is on sewing and weaving cooperatives because their membership is almost exclusively women.
