Amalna Maroc helped connect more cooperatives with online world markets, improve their business and quality control skills, expand their knowledge of Fair Trade, and build a cooperative support network in the Mid Atlas Mountains.

The Moroccan Government has identified women’s cooperatives as the most suitable way to empower women. The number of cooperatives in Morocco has now grown to over 2,000. Despite their numbers, recent research has found a lack of on-the-ground data on the effectiveness of women’s cooperatives in achieving growing empowerment.

Project: To help address the above research gap, field research will be conducted to achieve the following objectives:

(1) identify and measure characteristics and outcomes of empowerment that are common or elevated by participation in cooperatives;

(2) compare and contrast levels of empowerment between cooperatives;

(3) describe the attributes of cooperatives that successfully promote empowerment; and

(4) determine factors that sustain a successful cooperative in terms of both success in empowering women as well as financial success.
