In 2017, Amalna Morac founder, Audrey Huetteman, left behind everything she knew, her family, friends, and home, and set off for an adventure of a lifetime in Morocco as a United States Peace Corps volunteer. Audrey was sent to a small village in the Mid Atlas Mountain region outside of Azrou, her new home for the following 2 years.

Building on cross-cultural relationships she cultivated with the Moroccans in her village, she set out on an ambitious project with her Moroccan counterpart, Abdelhaq. The two of them worked together in harmony to start sewing classes for 40 local women, the first step leading to the eventual creation of a sewing cooperative. Audrey worked alongside the women, assisting them with their sewing needs while most importantly cheering them along the way. Audrey saw the women’s self confidence blossom before her eyes.  

Audrey finished her two years with the Peace Corps and returned back to America just as the Covid-19 pandemic began sweeping the world. Back in America, Audrey longed to go back to Morocco. She realized that she had just scratched the surface and that there was so much more work to be done for Moroccan women. So she rolled up her sleeves and set off to create a 501(c)(3) non-profit, Amalna Maroc.

Amalna means “Our Hope” in Arabic. Our hope at Amalna Morac is to advance women’s development in Morocco. We hope to expand and create opportunities and connections for women and girls with the one simple goal of increasing women’s empowerment in Morocco.
